How the ClearScan YAG laser works

Visible vascular structures are removed from the outer layer of the skin as they are preferentially heated with laser energy. Skin tone and color are restored, resulting in skin that you can be proud to show off once again. Patients with spider veins and varicose veins on the skin are ideal for laser vein treatment. Small, superficial vessels are quickly treated. Ideal candidates are generally healthy non-smokers.

What can the ClearScan YAG laser treat?

  • Spider veins
  • Facial veins
  • Telangiectasia
  • Facial veins
  • Redness
  • Rosacea
  • Broken capillaries

What happens during laser vein treatment

You will be provided with safety glasses or shields to protect your eyes from the laser as it treats other areas of your body. Laser energy is applied through the skin to penetrate the vessel and target the pigment in the blood. The laser does not affect the surrounding tissue — only the targeted vein.

The heat inside the vessel causes larger veins to collapse and smaller veins to close. Patients feel a brief, hot, or warm sensation in the areas that are being targeted, although discomfort is minimal. The procedure can last anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour, depending on the individual patient. Dr. Maercks will discuss your options with you for pain management should they be necessary.

Recovery

Skin may turn pink after treatment, but any discoloration will fade quickly. The body will re-absorb the damaged vessels over time during the natural cleansing process. Blood is removed from small capillaries instantly, making them almost invisible immediately after treatment. After any procedure, it’s very important to closely follow Dr. Maercks’s instructions. We may provide you with skincare products to treat the area, and the skin must be protected from direct sunlight. Healing time depends on the treatment and the severity of the condition, although recovery downtime is rare. Possible risks of the procedure include pain, thrombosis, epidermal damage, matting, or hyperpigmentation. If you’re concerned about any of these risks, please bring them up to Dr. Maercks during your consultation.

Results

Your veins will become less noticeable or disappear altogether during the 4 to 6 weeks post-treatment. You may notice minor swelling or bruising around treated areas, and the skin may be red for several days after your laser vein treatment. Patients are often given special compression stockings to increase the chances of a successful procedure and to minimize swelling after treatment. You may require more than one treatment, depending on the severity of your condition and your desired results.

Sclerotherapy

Besides the ClearScan YAG laser, Dr. Maercks also utilizes sclerotherapy, a microinjection treatment that works by using a sterile solution (either hypertonic saline or sodium tetradecyl sulfate) to make unsightly spider veins collapse and fade away.

The solution causes fibrosis, destroying the vein. Approximately 2 to 4 treatments are typically required to achieve the desired results, with very minimal downtime following. We recommend walking after your sclerotherapy treatments but avoiding intense exercise or sports for about four days following.
