The beauty of the mommy makeover

One of the most popular cosmetic treatments in the world, a mommy makeover combines multiple procedures to improve areas of the body that have changed due to having children or losing excess weight. These areas typically include the stomach, hips, and/or breasts — but the amazing thing about a mommy makeover is how customizable it is, meaning you can target any area that is bothering you with other treatments such as a butt augmentation or vaginal rejuvenation. The result of the mommy makeover is a more sculpted and toned body, and the goal is to help you love your body once again.

Key benefits of a mommy makeover

  • Only one surgery and one recovery period needed
  • An overall improved body appearance, all at once
  • Procedure is tailored to your exact areas of concern
  • Boosted self-esteem and confidence

Why do women get a mommy makeover?

There’s nothing so valuable as the gift of children, but there’s no question that the process of pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding take a serious toll on the body. This not only has a physical effect; the change can also greatly affect a woman’s emotional wellbeing. This can happen because the changes that happen to the body can lower self-esteem and a woman’s sense of femininity.

Common reasons that women choose a mommy makeover include:

  • Sagging of the breasts
  • Loss of structure and weakness of the abdominal muscles
  • Excess loose skin
  • Overly stretched skin
  • Distortion of the stomach and breasts

What happens during a mommy makeover surgery?

A mommy makeover is performed with the patient under general anesthesia. Because every procedure will be different, the exact details will not be the same for every patient. During your consultation with Dr. Maercks, he will examine you and listen to what you want to achieve with the surgery. He will then go through each procedure with you and explain the details and what you can expect during recovery. In general, a mommy makeover typically includes liposuction, a tummy tuck, and a breast procedure. Depending on the complexity of your procedure, treatment time may last several hours, and you may also require an overnight stay.

Excess fat is removed from targeted areas using a cannula, which goes inside the body to break up and suction away fat deposits. About 6 to 8 pounds of fat can be removed with liposuction.

Tummy tuck

Excess skin and fat are removed from the abdomen, and muscles and abdominal wall are tightened as well.

Breast procedure

A mommy makeover may include a breast augmentation and/or lift, or a breast reduction to reduce sagging and give the breasts a more attractive and youthful appearance.

Other treatments

Other treatments can be included in your mommy makeover based on your areas of concern. Some women choose to also have a butt augmentation, labiaplasty, and/or cosmetic injectables.

As mentioned above, every patient will have a different experience with a mommy makeover because it’s such a customized procedure. Recovery is the same: until it’s determined what procedures you’re undergoing, exact details of recovery can’t be known. This will have to be discussed during your consultation.

However, in general, patients who get a mommy makeover should plan on taking a couple of weeks to one month to recover.

Most women schedule their surgery according to when they’re able to have a friend or family member help them for a couple of weeks. This is especially important if you have young children to take care of.

As the swelling and bruising go down, the results of your mommy makeover will become more and more visible. During the first 3 to 6 weeks, you can expect your abdomen and breasts to be very swollen. This is normal. Final results can take six months to one year to become finalized, and these results are long-lasting and even permanent for most patients.

Good candidates for a mommy makeover

If you’re considering a mommy makeover in the Miami area, it may be exactly right for your needs. Candidates for a mommy makeover should be totally recovered from childbirth and nursing, and should also be near to their goal body weight. Women interested in this procedure should also be finished having children. Potential candidates should be overall healthy non-smokers, with realistic expectations for what the surgery can accomplish.

It’s good for individuals to be aware that although the procedure is called a “mommy makeover”, you don’t necessarily need to be a mommy to have the surgery. It can also be a good option for those who have lost an excessive amount of weight because typically the same areas of the body are affected as those in pregnancy: the abdomen, breasts, and hips. If you think you may be a good candidate for a mommy makeover — even if you’re not a mommy — please schedule a consultation with us.
