Abdominal etching, or “six-pack lipo contouring,” is a body contouring procedure that not only removes fat but also sculpts the abdomen to make the muscles more prominent. This procedure is ideal for those who keep a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and already have a fairly muscular stomach but still struggle to achieve the sculpted abs they want.

Before and After Photos
About Abdominal Etching
Abdominal etching essentially carves away fat in a strategic manner to deepen the natural grooves of the abdominal wall. It aims to further contour the body by removing fat from the sides to slim and tone the midsection. Through liposuction, this procedure improves abdominal aesthetics and helps patients achieve a toned, muscular physique that brings confidence. (1)
How Is Abdominal Etching Different From Liposuction?
Both liposuction and lipo contouring remove fat, often from the abdomen, but their focus differs slightly. In a standard liposuction procedure, Dr. Maercks removes fat from a few trouble areas. He does contour the body in the process, but the main focus is reducing these stubborn deposits. In lipo contouring and abdominal etching, he refines this contouring. Instead of only removing fat, he does so in a way that highlights muscle tone. In some cases, he may also replace fat to surround the muscles and create contrast. Liposuction is better for patients who do not need as much sculpting, as it simply removes fat. Abdominal etching sculpts and removes fat around the abdominal muscles to create the appearance of a chiseled six-pack.
Benefits
Abdominal etching provides a highly defined and athletic midsection by effectively removing fat along the natural grooves of the abdominal muscles. Under Dr. Maercks’ expert care, patients can:
- Achieve prominent six-pack abs
- Sculpt toned, sharp, V-shaped iliac furrows (Apollo’s Belt)
- Remove stubborn fat from superficial fat pockets
- Boost self-confidence and self-esteem
- Recover without a long downtime
- Experience natural-looking improvements
- Easily address additional concerns in one treatment session (if they choose)

Preparation
Effectively preparing for your abdominal etching ensures a smooth procedure and recovery. Dr. Maercks advises you to:
- Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements two weeks prior to your procedure
- Cease smoking and nicotine products two months prior
- Arrange transportation home from your appointment
- Reach and maintain a stable goal weight
- Take time away from your commitments to safely recover
You may receive additional preparation instructions depending on your medical history and procedure details. Following all information closely helps to optimize safety and results.
Procedure
Dr. Maercks will begin your procedure by marking the areas where he will remove, reposition, and sculpt fat in the abdomen. You will also receive an Exparel, which is a long-lasting, non-opioid local anesthetic to reduce discomfort during and after your procedure. Next, he will make small incisions around the navel. Dr. Maercks uses meticulous incision techniques so that any scarring hides within the muscle contours he creates. With liposuction, Dr. Maercks will precisely remove fat, revealing the natural six-pack underneath. To highlight natural definition, he typically leaves deeper fat near the muscles’ edges untouched. (2) After achieving your desired musculature, Dr. Maercks will close the incisions and dress you with a compression garment. This procedure usually takes one to three hours, depending on the amount of fat removal and sculpting you desire.
In each procedure, Dr. Maercks uses a central philosophy of histiocentricity. This guiding principle aims to maximize natural-appearing aesthetic enhancements while minimizing tissue trauma, contributing to less downtime and swelling.
Recovery
Immediately after your procedure, Dr. Maercks and his team will briefly monitor you before allowing you to recover at home. In the first few days of your initial recovery, you will experience mild discomfort, bruising, and swelling. You will need to rest for at least one to two weeks. You must wear your compression garment at all times. Dr. Maercks does encourage short and slow walks to promote circulation. Leading up to your third or fourth week, you may return to desk work and light tasks while avoiding any strenuous activities and continuing to wear your compression garment. At follow-up appointments with Dr. Maercks, he will evaluate your healing progress and gradually clear you to resume all activities. As swelling continues to decrease and tissues heal over three to six months, you will eventually enjoy a carved, defined muscle appearance.
Results
The results from abdominal etching will appear as a sharper, athletic, and defined six-pack or Apollo’s Belt, typically after three months of steady healing. What was once a soft midsection with present stubborn fat will now be a toned and sculpted abdomen. To preserve your results long-term, Dr. Maercks recommends maintaining a steady weight, exercising regularly, and living a healthy lifestyle.
Corresponding Procedures
Pectoral Implants
Pectoral implants can offer bulk and definition in the chest to help men enhance their torso proportions. These are silicone implants that Dr. Maercks places below the muscles to enhance the appearance of smaller-looking pecs. Alongside abdominal etching, this procedure helps men create a muscular, defined torso from their shoulders to waist.
Tummy Tuck
A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess and unwanted skin from the abdomen. This procedure is ideal for contouring, tightening, and sculpting a protruding belly. With abdominal etching, it can reveal a stronger, flatter, and more defined midsection.
Emsculpt Neo
Emsculpt Neo is a non-surgical way to improve definition in the body without downtime or discomfort. It aims to strengthen muscle while reducing stubborn and unwanted fat. This treatment utilizes High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetism (HIFEM) to induce rapid muscle contractions. This is the same action you would do at the gym, just on a much faster and stronger scale. This rapid stimulation helps reduce fat and strengthen the muscle, quickly turning a soft midsection into a strong torso.
