Breast reduction is a procedure that reduces the volume of enlarged breasts to enhance comfort and confidence. Breasts that are too large for a woman’s figure can be both a mental and physical burden and lead to neck, back, and shoulder pain as well as embarrassment. A personalized breast reduction offers women an effective solution to this issue, helping to enhance their quality of life and reduce their discomfort.

As a breast reduction specialist, Dr. Rian Maercks of The Maercks Institute uses both traditional and advanced techniques to help women who are negatively affected by their large breasts.

Dr. Maercks is a board-certified, double-fellowship-trained plastic surgeon with specialized expertise in cosmetic breast procedures. Since opening The Maercks Institute in 2009, he has changed the lives of thousands of patients. About Breast Reduction

Breast reduction aims to decrease the size of excessively large breasts by removing fat, glandular tissue, and skin. The procedure seeks to provide relief from physical discomfort, enhance the body’s proportions, and improve self-esteem. (1)

Many women decide to undergo breast reduction surgery for both cosmetic reasons and to improve their personal health and comfort. Also referred to as a “reduction mammaplasty,” a breast reduction will slenderize the silhouette and alleviate pain associated with overly large breasts, including neck, back, and shoulder pain. (1) Other symptoms commonly reported by women with enlarged breasts include chafing and skin irritation along the breast fold, difficulty participating in physical activities or exercising, dissatisfaction with one’s image, self-consciousness about the size of their breasts, and more. (1) During a breast reduction, fat, skin, and glandular tissue are removed. The breasts are then lifted and re-shaped to make them smaller and firmer. Breast reduction surgery can also be used to decrease and correct the size of the nipple and areola.

Breast reductions are also not exclusive to women, either. Men with gynecomastia, a condition characterized by excessive breast tissue in men, can undergo a male breast reduction to sculpt a strong, toned, and masculine chest. (2)

Benefits

Breast reductions come with numerous benefits, all of which help patients enjoy their lives without heavy, burdensome breasts weighing them down. When patients undergo personalized treatment at The Maercks Institute, they often see improvements like:

  • Relief from discomfort: Reducing the weight of large breasts alleviates chronic pain in the back, neck, and shoulders, enhancing physical health and comfort.
  • Better posture: By reducing breast size, patients may experience better posture, which can further decrease pain in supportive muscles.
  • Enhanced physical activity: Individuals often find it easier to engage in exercise and sports after undergoing treatment, promoting a healthier lifestyle.
  • Improved clothing fit: Many report having a wider assortment of clothing options post-surgery since smaller breasts tend to fit better into standard-sized garments.
  • Improved breast symmetry: The surgery can correct any asymmetry between the two breasts, providing a more balanced, aesthetically pleasing appearance.
  • Increased confidence: Patients frequently experience a boost in self-esteem and body image.
  • Reduction in skin irritation: The removal of excess breast tissue can greatly decrease chafing and irritation under the breasts.

Candidates

If your breasts are larger than you would like them to be, then you may benefit greatly from a breast reduction. The best candidates for this procedure are those who:

  • Struggle with large, pendulous breasts.
  • Are self-conscious about their breast or body shape.
  • Experience pain in the neck, shoulders, and/or back, or have shoulder grooving or breast fold infections.
  • Have trouble finding clothing that fits properly.

Patients should ideally be non-smokers who are in good general health. Candidates need to keep their expectations realistic and not plan to breastfeed in the future.

Personal Consultation

A personal consultation is essential for determining if breast reduction surgery aligns with your goals. During this appointment, Dr. Maercks will discuss your concerns, review your medical history, and examine your breasts. He will explain the different surgical options available, potential risks, and anticipated outcomes. This consultation provides you with an opportunity to ask questions and gain clarity on the process. We encourage you to express your expectations so that together, you and Dr. Maercks can create an individualized plan tailored to your aesthetic needs.

Preparation

Following your consultation, you will receive personalized preparation instructions for your treatment. Following these will ensure a safe procedure with optimal results. Patients should stop taking blood-thinning medications or supplements as directed by Dr. Maercks and avoid alcohol consumption. Patients who smoke or use other forms of nicotine will be asked to abstain before and after their procedure. Because anesthesia is used, please arrange transportation home. Take time away from work and other social obligations to recover unburdened, and fill prescriptions for pain medications and/or antibiotics before the day of your treatment.

Procedure

Breast reduction surgeries are performed under general anesthesia and take between 2 and 4 hours to complete. Dr. Maercks will make an anchor-shaped or inverted T-shaped incision surrounding the areola and extending down to the crease below the breast. The skin, fat, and glandular tissue are then removed from the area. Additional fat will be liposuctioned. The nipple and areola are then elevated while the breast is re-shaped and lifted to achieve the desired result. Dr. Maercks will then close the incisions with stitches and cover the area with gauze and/or medical tape.

Recovery

You can expect 1 to 2 weeks of recovery time, during which you will need to wear a surgical bra. (2) You may also need to wear drains to collect any fluid accumulation at the surgery site. Patients often experience swelling and bruising, but medication can be prescribed to help manage this. Swelling resulting from the procedure may cause some loss of feeling in the breast and nipples, but this will return as you continue to recover. Any swelling and bruising will subside within the first few weeks following your breast reduction; however, it may be anywhere from 6 to 12 months before your new breasts “settle.” (2)

Results

The outcome of breast reduction surgery is often transformative. You can expect improved breast size, reduced physical discomfort, increased breast symmetry, and enhanced confidence. While final results become clearer over several months, many individuals begin to notice changes immediately after the swelling subsides.

Corresponding Procedures

Breast reduction procedures will often include techniques used in a breast lift, or mastopexy, especially if the enlarged breasts sag far down the chest or have become ptotic. In a breast lift, Dr. Maercks will remove excess skin and tissue and tighten the chest muscles to create a stronger foundation for the breasts. In some cases, the nipples may be repositioned to a higher location. If Dr. Maercks believes you will benefit from including a breast lift in your breast reduction treatment, he will discuss this during your consultation.

FAQ

What are the risks and complications associated with breast reduction procedures?

While breast reduction is generally safe, complications can occur, as with any surgical procedure. Possible risks include infection, scarring, changes in nipple sensation, and complications from anesthesia. Discuss these factors openly with Dr. Maercks during your consultation.

Will I be able to breastfeed after a breast reduction?

Breastfeeding ability may change after breast reduction surgery, depending on the extent and method of tissue removal. Some women may still successfully breastfeed, while others may find it challenging or not possible. Each case is unique, and discussing future pregnancy plans during your consultation is important.

Are breast reductions covered by insurance?

Insurance coverage for breast reduction varies depending on your policy and individual circumstances. Typically, insurers will consider covering the surgery if it is deemed medically necessary due to chronic pain. It is advisable to check with your provider regarding specific criteria for coverage.

How long does it take to recover from a breast reduction?

Recovery times vary per individual, but most patients can expect to return to regular activities within a couple of weeks. Full recovery might take several months, especially for complete healing of incisions.

Are there age restrictions for breast reduction?

Breast reduction may be performed on women and men of various ages; however, ideally, individuals should be physically mature and emotionally ready for the procedure. A personal consultation will help determine suitability.
