Goals of brow lift surgery

One of the most obvious signs of age develops as the brow begins its descent downward on the face. A slumped, or overly-furrowed brow often creates an exhausted or unfriendly expression. A brow lift addresses this problem by:

  • Restoring the natural position of the eyebrows
  • Elevating and re-positioning the brow line
  • Smoothing horizontal forehead lines
  • Enhancing and opening up the eyes
  • Reducing the tired, angry, or sad appearance that results from a drawn, creased forehead
  • Removing excess tissue and weight from the upper eyelid area
  • Tightening excess forehead skin
  • Lessening the appearance of crow’s feet
  • Providing youthful arch for the eyebrows
  • Delivering a more refreshed, friendlier, younger-looking appearance

The brow lift procedure

A brow lift is an outpatient procedure performed with the patient under general anesthesia. A brow lift is often combined with other procedures such as an eyelid lift or dermal fillers for enhanced results. Incision type and placement will be determined by the technique of brow lift you will be getting (see below), but in general, the incision can be made above the forehead; along the hair-bearing scalp; on the side of the head; in the forehead creases or the upper eyelids. Dr. Maercks is always extremely careful to create incisions to minimize the visibility of the scar. Once the surgery is complete, the area will be dressed to help with swelling and healing. A brow lift typically takes 1 to 2 hours, but the exact amount of time will be determined during your consultation, along with the procedure technique and incision placement.

Recovery and results

You will need to wear the surgical dressing for approximately two days, and your stitches can be removed in about a week at your follow-up visit with Dr. Maercks. Patients usually require 1 to 2 weeks to recover fully but may return to desk-type work in 3 to 5 days following surgery. You should remain fairly inactive for the first few days following the procedure. During the first two weeks after your brow lift, you may experience headaches, numbness, mild pain, tightness, itching, bruising, swelling, and nausea. If needed, Dr. Maercks may prescribe medication to help with this. High-intensity exercise should be avoided for the first 4 to 6 weeks. Early results from your brow lift will be visible at about three weeks, with final results becoming apparent at about four months. Once your results are finalized, you can enjoy a more refreshed and attractive appearance for many years.

Brow lift techniques

There is a wide variety of brow lift techniques. This enables Dr. Maercks to personalize your surgery to your specific areas of concern, your personal aesthetic goals, his own expert opinion, and physical traits such as your hairline and facial anatomy. The type of brow lift technique for your procedure will be determined during your consultation.

Coronal brow lift

An incision is made within the scalp that reaches from ear to ear behind the hairline.

Direct brow lift

An incision is made at the top of the eyebrows to remove muscle and fat.

Temporal brow lift

Incisions are made at the temples to smooth forehead lines.

Indirect brow lift

An incision is made within the forehead crease, through which excess skin and fat are removed.

Endoscopic brow lift

A tiny camera is inserted through small incisions along the hairline, allowing for excellent precision and preservation of the healthy tissue.

Mid-forehead brow lift

Ideal for men with a receding hairline, this technique uses an incision hidden in the horizontal crease of the forehead.
